The Garmin Approach S3 golf gps builds on the enormous popularity of the S1 golf gps watch. Simple to use, discreet and accurate it had proven a best seller since it’s launch.
The S1, although a great product, is somewhat limited. It gives you yardages to the front, middle and back of the green. That’s good information to have, but with other golf gps devices offering more, Garmin has stepped up to the plate and really delivered with the Approach S3. Pre-loaded with 28,000 courses worldwide it is a joy to use.
Garmin Approach S3 Golf GPS - Play It Straight Out Of The Box
One of the great things about this golf gps unit is that you can pretty much use it straight away. Simply charge it up at your home or office (a car charging unit is available too), and you're good to go. The battery will give about 8 hours of gps time on one charge, so you'll be fine for a couple of rounds of golf.
When you open the box you'll find an AC adaptor so you can charge from the mains, as well as a USB cable so you can charge from a laptop or computer.
With the Garmin Approach S3 golf gps you don't need to hook it up to your computer and there are no ongoing subscription charges. Once you've bought it there are no further expenses. In fact you can even get free course updates via the Garmin website.
Approach S3 - Easy To Wear, Good To Use
The S3 is a good looking product. It looks like a sports watch, and in fact can be worn as a watch. It comes in two color schemes - white with red trim, and black with red and grey trim. Both look sharp and are comfortable to wear.
The screen is very clear and sharp, and given the size it's remarkably easy to read. The information is presented well, and you never have the feeling that things are cluttered.
Garmin Approach S3 Golf GPS Features
As well as the expected yardages to the front, middle and back of the green, the Garmin Approach S3 gives you distances to layup areas and doglegs, and has customizable yardage points like water hazards or bunkers so you can build a truly accurate yardage picture of your favorite golf courses.
Green View - Get An Accurate Picture Of The Green
Once you get a view of the green you can re-position the flag icon on the touchscreen (even with a gloved finger) so your yardages are even more accurate. So, if you notice the flag is at the back, right of the green, switch to Green View mode and slide the flag to the back, right - the yardages update instantly. This is great on approach shots where club selection into a tricky green is vital.
How Far Did You Hit It?
Most golfers have an idea of how far they hit each club - but it's only an idea. With the Shot Measure function you can find out how far you actually hit each club in the bag. Simply press the button after you've hit your shot and then start walking to the ball. You might think you hit that 7 iron 140 yards, but if you know it's more like 147 yards then your overall accuracy and shot making is going to improve. Accurate information is a great help in playing a round of golf.
Also, when you really hit one out of the screws you can find out just how far it went - good for bragging rights!
Keep Score And Print Of Your Scorecard
The Garmin Approach S3 golf gps unit allows you to keep score as your round progresses. It covers Strokeplay and Stableford formats, and you can store and print off scorecards from your computer.
"This watch is unbelieveable. It truly speeds up the game for you and your whol foursome (that is if you share the information). Incredibly accurate and very easy to use. A+"
"I absolutely love this thing. I have used a Skycaddy and a uPro in the past and this blows them away. It is very accurate, and keeps score well(Just remember to go to the score card on each hole). The biggest plus for me is it is ALWAYS on. I don't have to push a button to see my yardage, I just glance at my wrist. It has also had every course I've played so far(although that's only 6 courses so far)."
"Charged it and took it out to the course. Fantastic! Easy to use and very accurate. It really speeds up play. Simply look at your wrist and you are good to go. No pacing and estimating distance. No clunky object you have to carry."
When the S1 gps watch came out I admit to being blown away by the ease of use, although it was limited in the information.
The Garmin Approach S3 takes things to an entirely different level. You can get most of the information you would have on a regular full-size gps right there on your wrist. No fumbling around your pocket or golf bag. The yardages you need are just a glance away.
Couple this with no ongoing fees and the accuracy that Garmin are famous, then I have to give the Garmin Approach S3 a very strong recommendation.
