Garmin G6 Approach Golf GPS Review

The Garmin G6 Approach golf gps device is the latest handheld offering from navigation giant Garmin. Small, light and accurate, it is fun to use on the golf course. With 25,000 preloaded courses and no subscription charge it also catches the eye when it comes to cost. So, does this US$300/UK£350 device perform?

The first thing you notice when you get your hands on the Garmin G6 Approach is how small it is. Compared to some golf gps devices (the Garmin G5, for example) it appears tiny. But don't let size fool you - this thing packs a big punch and outperforms many of its larger competitors.

It's only 1.3 x 2.2 x 3.9 inches and weighs a mere 6.4 ounces (181 grams), so fits comfortably into the smallest and tightest of pockets. Waterproof, it has a full color screen so using it is very easy and enjoyable.

Garmin Approach G6 Golf GPS review - Garmin G6 ApproachGarmin G6 - Ease Of Use

The Garmin G6 has a very bright screen (much brighter than previous Garmin handheld golf gps), and as such can be used even on the sunniest of days. The touchscreen is very responsive, even if you are wearing a glove.

The internal Lithium Ion battery helps power the screen and the whole unit, and Garmin claim it will keep going for up to 15 hours, so you can get 3 or 4 rounds in on one charge.

The unit is pleasing to look at and has two simple buttons which access useful features.

Garmin G6 Approach - Power At Your Fingertips

The Score/Measure button does as the name would suggest. With one click it brings up a scorecard for up to 4 players and the device is programmed to keep scores in Strokeplay, Matchplay, Skins and Stableford formats - very handy!

These scores can be stored if you want to hook your unit up to a computer after your round.

Another click of the button brings up the useful measuring facility which you can use to work out just how far you are hitting your shots. You can use this feature on the Garmin G6 to work out your average distance per club.

The measuring facility can also be useful if you are playing in hot or cold temperatures or at altitude, as you can hit a few balls, determine how it compares against your usual distances and adjust your club selection accordingly.

You can slide your finger and move the flag to where the pin is and receive a more accurate yardage instantly.

Garmin G6 Approach - Out Of The Box and Straight Onto The Golf Course

One of the best features of the Garmin Approach G6 is that you can play it straight out of the box. Charge it up (there is a cable provided) and you're ready to go.

Acquiring satellites can sometimes take a couple of minutes so it's best to switch it on when you arrive at the course so you will be ready on the first tee.

You can preview the course you are due to play before you even get there and go through hole-by-hole planning your strategy.

The Garmin G6 comes pre-loaded with 25,000 worldwide courses so there is no need to download anything. It really is that simple to get going with it.

Garmin G6 Golf GPS Review

I played three round with this device before doing the review and I absolutely loved it. I am a big fan of the Garmin G3, and this has taken things onto a whole new level. I especially loved the bright screen.

Another useful addition on the Garmin G6 over previous models is the display of landing areas. Arcs are shown at 100, 150, 200 and 250 yards from the center of the green which is useful information if you have a favorite distance you love to play into the green from, or when you are planning club selection strategy on long par 5s.

You can also slide your finger to where you want be be on the hole and it will tell you the distance to that point and the distances to the green.

Garmin Approach G6 Golf GPS User Reviews

"I'm a senior golfer and have used both gps and rangefinder models in the past. This one far exceeds anything I have owened before. It does give you distance to the center of the green, but the feature I find most useful is the distance for each of your shots, making club selection more realistic. The green view is nice for wedges and chips. Some of the fonts are to small to read without glasses. Remember I said I'm a senior golfer. Otherwise it's easy to read, even in bright sunlight. Has had all my local courses without requiring down-loads or annual subscriptions. Small and easy to carry in a back pocket during a round. Accurate distances take away some guess work, but you still have to hit the shot."

"The fact that there is no subscription fee and that it comes with about 27,000 courses preloaded is a huge plus. The G6 is also water-proof which will help when we get caught in those torrential summer afternoon storms. The price point is good and was about what I hoped to pay for a GPS with course viewing. That's another feature I love. You can preview any course easily. The phone apps I've had didn't have a preview mode, so it would give you distances of 1000s of yards from your current location. The G6 lets you browse the course your going to play ahead of time in a special preview mode. I think I'm going to be quite happy with the G6."

"This GPS has everything you need. It's accurate, comes already preloaded with courses, has no fees (compare to a GPS that you have to pay for updates or pay a yearly fee), and the battery life is good to easily get 3 full rounds in. I've actually gotten 4 18-hole rounds out of a single charge. Also for the stat-fueled player, you can measure any shot, keep track of averages for every club and it can also keep track of fairways hit and greens in regulation in addition to simply keeping your score."

Garmin G6 Approach  Golf GPS Summary

Garmin have produced a terrific product in the G6. With it's out-of-the box accessibility, no downloads or subscription fees to pay, it ticks the boxes important to many golfers.

Feature packed, really easy to use and, most importantly, accurate, I have no hesitation in giving a very strong recommendation for the Garmin G6 Approach.
