Bushnell Golf GPS Hybrid Laser Rangefinder Review

The Bushnell Golf GPS Hybrid Laser Rangefinder is the first of its kind – a GPS and a rangefinder rolled into one, and seems to be the answer to the question that has plagued golfers around the world – “Rangefinder, or GPS?” At around UK$399 / UK£399 it may give you everything you need without breaking the bank.

Bushnell Golf GPS Hybrid Design, Construction & User Interface

The Bushnell Golf GPS Hybrid Laser Rangefinder looks like a cousin of the Bushnell Tour v2 that hits the gym regularly. It has the exact same design as the V2, but is a lot beefier thanks to the GPS unit embedded on its side.

Since it is designed for outdoor use, this Bushnell rangefinder is housed in a sturdy, water resistant enclosure (please note that it is ‘water resistant’ and not ‘water proof’ – there’s a marked difference between these two categories!) and features an easy to use design that resembles large, pre-digital era camcorders.

There is a thick rubber grip on top of the unit to ensure ease of use. At just 8.5oz, you will be surprised how light this device really is, despite the outward bulky appearance.

It’s GPS element is extremely easy to use via a large LCD screen attached to the side of the unit. The GPS is controlled by 6 large buttons underneath the LCD. While it does not have the colorful, high quality screen of, say, a Sonocaddie v500, the simple interface gets the job done without any snazzy effects.

The Bushnell Hybrid Laser GPS is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a battery life of 14-16 hours – more than adequate for a long day’s play.

Since this hybrid unit combines a GPS as well as a golf rangefinder, let’s take a look at the features separately:

Bushnell Golf GPS Hybrid – Rangefinder Performance

As a rangefinder, the Bushnell Hybrid Laser GPS is more than adequate and packs in a ton of features. The PinSeeker technology used by 90% of all PGA professionals automatically homes in on the flag with a +/- 1 yard accuracy. It has a range of 5 to 1000 meters and features 5 x magnifications as well.

Like its aforementioned rangefinder cousin, the V2, this hybrid unit has a useful scan mode that shows multiple ranges while panning. But perhaps the best feature of the rangefinder is the exceptional clarity and brightness of the optics which makes it a real pleasure to use.

Bushnell Golf GPS Hybrid – GPS Performance

As a GPS unit, the Bushnell Hybrid Laser GPS pulls no punches. While it lacks the features and sheer visual delight of other units, it more than makes up for it with ease of use.

The GPS comes pre-loaded with 16,000 courses. You don’t need to hook it up to the computer, create an account with the company website and load it with software; it comes ready to play, right out of the box.

The GPS features instant course recognition that makes set up a breeze. It shows you the distance to the front, center, and back of the green.

Other technologies like Auto Hole Advance and a Shot Distance calculator complete an already solid package. The best part about this device is that you don’t have to pay a dime for any annual membership fees. All you need to do is register the device within 45 days of purchase at the company’s website for free, and log in periodically to download any new course maps and updates.

Bushnell Golf GPS Hybrid User Reviews

“I’m very glad I found the Bushnell hybrid. I’ve played a couple rounds with it so far and love it. The range finder, which I use 90% of the time, is very quick to get yardages and easy to find the flag from 200 in. The GPS is rather sparse, but has everything I need, back front middle and some other elements on certain holes, like a creek. You can also add your own items on courses you play a lot. The gps is very responsive and it moves from hole to hole on its own.”

“I’ve played 4 rounds of golf with this unit over the past 3 weeks on the original charge and it still shows 60% battery life remaining. This is after using the unit to scope almost every shot for my playing partner and I over the 18 holes of each round. Sometimes gave false yardages when there were trees or other objects behind the flag – but using the gps feature showing front/back distances to the green then confirmed the correct yardage to the flag. Speeds up play significantly and has been a great tool to accurately select the proper club.”

“I had a SkyCaddie for the last 6 years (2 different models)and find the Bushnell hybrid provides GPS yardages as accurately as the SkyCaddie, and coupled with the Laser feature with no annual subscription fee. Love it.”

Summary

This golf gps hybrid rangefinder is an excellent all-round device that does two jobs – rangefinder and GPS – more than adequately. While there might be better standalone devices than this on the market, few combine the features of a rangefinder and GPS in such a user friendly, affordable unit.

If you are looking for a solid rangefinder with a GPS unit to boot, look no further than the Bushnell golf  gps hybrid laser system.
